The Szent István University was founded on January 1, 2000 with the integration of three universities and two colleges. It has got at present ten faculties and carries out its activities on six campuses. As information infrastructure for teaching and research the university maintains a university library. The university library operates as a unified system of research libraries. The institutions within this system follow the organisation of the university in their structure and location; member libraries operate at each of the six campuses.

The Library of the Szent István University regards it as its primary task to create equal opportunities for all faculty members, researchers and students to obtain information based on the principle of equal chances. For this reason, it is necessary to create a shared catalogue so that the holdings of the Library are accessible and searchable from each member library and an exchange of data is implemented in order to speed up processing.

The first step can be made rapidly, and will be directed at the unification of existing systems and the creation of a joint virtual catalogue.

As a result, in all the six libraries a fully unified TINLIB V300-based system will be operating.
