Launched in the cooperation of the Department of Telecommunications of BUTE (Budapest University of Technology and Economics) and Siemens Telefongyár Ltd. the QoSMon project focused on the design and development of a network service level monitoring system for IP based networks.

The QoSMon system is capable of measuring QoS parameters on different routes in the network of an ISP (Internet Service Provider). The system draws figures based on the measured data thus informing the network managers on the current state of the network. Moreover, these figures can also be presented to the users as well. In this way the SLA parameters can be monitored both by the user and the ISP.

The system estimates the QoS parameters for different routes in the network after executing a statistical analysis on the collected data, which is obtained either by active measurements or measurement packets or by querying the routers in the network.

The components of the system can be installed on a single host, however, by creating a distributed installation the generated traffic can be further optimized. The optimal installation strategy should take the characteristics of the network into account.

The GUI (Graphical User Interface) is a WWW application, which ensures a unified structure and a platform independent access for both administrators and normal users. The integrated user identification altogether with the different user groups facilitates a differentiated access for the users of the system.
