Digitized journals in the Debrecen University Library

As a result of a multi-year project, the Debrecen University Library has 10 regional journals from the late 19^th early 20^th century in electronic, full text form.

As scanning and image processing needs a lot of time, we had to find the optimal way between low costs and the usability of the database.

The digitised pages are in picture format, we have not converted them into text format, so you can see them in the original form. We create a bibliographic database of the journals, which makes title, author and subject searches available, and offers a one click connect into the appropriate pages. The image processing, creation of pictures of desired size was done by a background process, on a UNIX system. A CGI script provides the web interface, which needs only the appropriate configuration to generate the web page layout of the presently accessible journal issues.

In my opinion, this well designed workflow and simple structure provide the usability of the database and the efficient uploading.
