The most important factors in quick and efficient information retrieval are the quality of indexing and the quality of the search software. Current trends in the research and development of these factors are:
Basic rules in Web development:
User-friendly interfaces and multiple search options
Data exchange formats (MARC)
Metadata
Standardisation projects (XML, SGML, XHTML, Z39.50)
Thesauri for integrated library software and bibliographical databases
Scientific search engines (Scirus, Search4Science), subject oriented search integrators (e.g. Health on the Net)
Standardising the reliability of information available on the Web: defining rules to hold Web site developers to basic ethical standards in the presentation of information and to help make sure readers always know the source and the purpose of the data they are reading.
