The development of computer managed instruction systems has recently received a new impetus. Several new authoring systems have appeared in the market that can manage the events of computer aided learning processes much more efficiently than any other system before. It has become an important criterion that these systems should be able to publish on the Web.

Recently a number of new organisations have been formed that try to formulate the criteria of computer aided learning systems. In their work they have formulated several new formulae that can serve as a basis for the creation of new generation learning systems.

The appearance of XML has especially contributed to the creation of Web-based applications. Using XML can help creating schemes that describe the participants of the learning system. Applying these, one can formulate an LMS (Learning Management System) with the help of which one can easily follow the activities of the learners and the material of learning.

To create a running environment is the target of several platforms at the moment. The task of the coming years will be to facilitate these systems with running environment, preferably platform-free ones.
