Portability of common document types

Documents of different types are routinely exchanged now: e-mail messages, formatted and unformatted text (with national characters), images, spreadsheets, presentations and web pages. Document formats are, however, far from being well standardised, stable in time and really portable. This is due to the mostly proprietary nature of the tools used for their manipulation.

We discuss the possible and available document formats and standards, applications and usage problems. Some kind of best practice is proposed to the quoted problems.
