At the beginning of the 21st century almost all library activities have software support. The work of librarians is helped by readymade solutions in almost every field from integrated library systems for full automation of library activities to on-line reference IMs and digital repositories. Nevertheless there are gaps in several areas such as the software background as well as the complete fulfillment of user's needs and the optimization of inside work stages.

The University Library of Kaposvar University has experienced all the above problems during its relatively short history. This talk presents 3 developments demonstrating how thorough and well-designed developments can effectively ensure that libraries do their activities more efficiently. In accordance with international and national trends, local use is decreasing while the use of on-line services is on the increase in our library. In most areas taught at our university professional journals serve as primary sources of information. The "Electronic Service of Journals Content List" was introduced to inform our users on-line of the journals the library subscribes to. Users can select journals relevant to their interests and they are automatically informed of the exact arrival of the particular journal at the library. The electronic version of the journal content list is available for them immediately.

It has always been a problem in the University Library how to involve effectively all those members of staff in collection organization who face users’ daily needs directly. Although this is supported by the collection organization module of the integrated system, specific needs characteristic in our library can be fulfilled by neither this nor any other available solutions. This talk presents our own development, i.e. the "Electronic Desiderate".

The third and latest development, the electronic “New Books Service” is closely connected to both former ones and also to the integrated system of the library. Within the frameworks of this service users can select their fields of interest from a list of subjects. They are regularly notified of the newly acquired and processed publications within the selected fields. The talk explains how this system differs from SDI services.
