Scientific calculations requiring massive computing power are being done in great part in distributed, heterogeneous computing environments. BOINC is one of the systems offering such services and is being used in several volunteer computing projects and desktop grids. Millions of people have already joined these projects to offer the unused processing power of their computer. However, downloading and installing the required client program is tiresome and claims a level of trust, which might turn away potential participants. In the Web2Grid project we are simplifying this tedious process to a single click. With the advance of the Internet, browsers have gained an enormous user base. We have developed a JavaScript function library utilizing HTML5 technologies with a wide variety of possible usages. One of them is to create a web application similar to the original BOINC client but requiring no installation whatsoever. Another would be to create a computing client that can be seamlessly integrated into any website, and that’s just two of the many possibilities. We are taking a fundamentally new approach to the future of computing systems that aims to extend the computing capacity by dramatically increasing the number of participants.
