We were looking for a solution for user authentication on public computers placed in reading rooms in the Centre for Learning. Our intention was to find a free and open source software which operates on both Windows and Linux platforms suitable for being adjusted and developed in accordance with the local needs and requirements. This urge led us to meet with the software Libki developed by an American library. Since it was created in a PHP-framework it was easy to make adjustments which made our clients able to authenticate users from the library's Corvina database.
However, the use of the software raised questions, several problems and further needs came up. This forced the serious modification of the system later on. Considering the new requirements, the client program has been rewritten by our programmers. So it became possible that the system provides different operations for different user types.
In our presentation we will introduce the operation of the Libki-system, some problems occured during its use, and possibilities for further development.
