Repositories: content, compatibility, effectiveness, quality

Certain developments and activities taking place in Hungary necessitate a closer look at the question of repositories. The respective exploratory approach should be comprehensive covering the whole process from the birth of the concept until its implementation.  While the Eszterházy Károly College began to develop an institutional repository, several issues have yet to be discussed and clarified in a scientific manner by the professional community.

On-site repository testing based upon user opinions and software review scheduled to take place in the following months provides an appropriate background for such scholarly approach. Our main priority is the service function of the given repository and the expected creativity in facilitating on-line access in a variety of ways and interactive formats. (Consequently, on-line accessibility entails the retrieval and applicability of digitalized information, along with the sum of the services supporting the work performed in addition to the clarification of copyright or intellectual ownership issues.)

Repositories are expected to perform three additional functions. The first task is to enhance the effectiveness of instructional, learning and research activities via the integration of digital repositories and other portal elements. The next step is the support of instruction and learning through the integration of certain traditional library services into the electronic environment. The third task is providing electronic support for public libraries by making access to information less difficult for the general public.

My presentation attempts to take a scholarly look at the abovementioned problems and hopes to inspire a scientific debate on the topic.
