RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification), the technology which identifies and tracks products, tangible and current assets, spreads fast all over the world. After its military then industrial and healthcare applications, RFID appeared in the libraries as well. In the past few years more and more libraries have decided to introduce this new technology. It enables fast and accurate identification, makes the handling of the library stock easier, the librarian is relieved of many manual work processes.
RFID has been used in the Technical Library of Gedeon Richter Plc for the identification of documents since 2008. We have considered the RFID the most advantageous in the field of inventory, and in 2012 the technology met all our expectations. It is not necessary to take down each and every document from the shelf, by using the hand reader the tags of hundreds of books can be registered during a short time. The process consists of the following phases: 1) identifying the items, 2) uploading the prepared list via wifi network into the integrated library system, 3) preparation of reports about the stock, from different point of views.
The use of the RFID technology made the inventory, which was a cumbersome task before, significantly easier and faster. We could spare time for the other library tasks. We did not have to limit our opening hours and services, so our users, who could use the library without any restrictions, benefited from the new system as well.
