The HURO Cross-Border Co-operation Programme 2007-2013 financed by the European Union gave significant possibilities for development of the infocommunication system of the University of Debrecen. The Centre of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of the University of Debrecen participated with success in three HURO projects together with University of Oradea and the Politehnica University of Timisoara in the last years. These projects had duration of 18, 14, and 16 months, respectively, where the last project is running actually. The purpose was development of the cross-border Internet infrastructure whereby three service areas in the infocommunication system of the university achieved significant development.
The growing number of wireless devices with intensive network connection claimed development of Eduroam wireless (WiFi) access system. In the first phase WiFi hot zones were implemented in frequently used public spaces within the buildings under the project HURO/0802/012_AF. Then was placed 130 pcs base station in 21 buildings on 4 campuses to cover most frequented places by students and staff. In the second step the framework of the project HURO/1101/074/1.2.1 placed further 150 base stations to ensure outdoor WiFi (IEEE 802.11n) coverage. As these APs are indoor design, only antennas installed outside. The base stations are controlled by two wireless controllers that operate in a redundant, fail-over system, placed in different campuses.
Development of the multimedia system of the University of Debrecen was implemented by two joint projects with University of Oradea (HURO/0901/265/1.2.3) and the Politehnica University of Timisoara (HURO/1101/074/1.2.1). There was installed a professional web-radio, TV studios, HD video conferencing devices. A VPN connection also was established between the institutions for QoS based content delivery. The developed system is able to create on-line video and multimedia streaming content and distribute it on the Internet.
Replacement of the outdated institutional firewall is also implemented in this program, as one of the most pressing problem of the ICT services at the University of Debrecen. Because of the ever-growing number of endpoints and continuous increasing of the logical connections, the 1,5 Gbit/s filter capacity and seven years old hardware could not serve the quantity requirements. A high capacity firewall installed during the project HURO/1101/074/1.2.1 resulted a significant acceleration in translation of private addresses and traffic filtering functions, improving the quality sense of the users.
In the presentation we plan to give details about the design, development, integration, and operational experiences of a well running ICT system financed by international budget sources having wireless controller based WiFi network with 300 access points, 20 Gbit/s filtering rate firewall, useful web-radio, and IPTV streaming services.
